In September 1999 the Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Bajpeyi, gave Winand Callewaert the Special Reward for Outstanding Contribution to the Study of Hindi, with a personal letter and a personalized silver plaque.
In 2008 Prof. Winand Callewaert retired officially from the university, but now goes on teaching Sanskrit and History of India.
