After receiving his BA (1989), MA (1991), and Teaching Certificate (1991) in Classics from the Rijksuniversiteit Gent, Jeroen De Keyser specialized in Medieval and Renaissance Latin at the University of Florence, thanks to a one-year grant awarded by the Flemish Government and the Italian Foreign Office. After a year as research fellow at Ghent University and several years of teaching in secondary education, he combined a career as a freelance translator with his PhD research at the University of Turin. In 2008 he obtained his Dottorato di ricerca with a thesis about the fifteenth century Italian humanist Francesco Filelfo’s Latin translations of Xenophon.
In 2008-2010 Jeroen De Keyser was visiting professor of Italian at the Hogeschool Gent, and since 2009 he has been working, under the supervision of professors Jan Papy and Dirk Sacré, on a KULeuven Research Fund project that will lead to the critical edition of Francesco Filelfo’s extensive Latin and Greek correspondence, a major source for the history of early Humanism. Furthermore, he is preparing the editio princeps of Filelfo’s epic poem, the Sphortias, and of his philosophical dialogue Commentationes Florentinae de Exilio (for the I Tatti Renaissance Library)
His main research interests include Quattrocento Humanism and the transmission of the Latin and Greek literary tradition in the Italian Renaissance, as well as Cicero, Latin epic poetry, historiography and epistolography. For the Catalogus Translationum et Commentariorum series, he is preparing the entries on Polybius and Aristophanes.
Jeroen De Keyser is teaching the MA course on the History of Humanism and Neo-Latin Literature at the Leuven Arts Faculty, and he is a member of the editorial board of the international journal Schede Umanistiche (Bologna).
