Dirk Sacré
Dirk
Sacré obtained his PhD in Classics from the KULeuven in 1986 under the direction
of the late Professor Jozef IJsewijn. From 1987 until 1998, Sacré taught
Latin at the University of Antwerp, combining this (since 1994) with a part-time
job as a Professor of Latin at the KULeuven. From 1998 on, he teaches solely
at the KULeuven; his courses are in the field of Classical and Neo-Latin
literature. He devotes his scholarly attention to a wide range of topics
in the field of Neo-Latin belles-lettres. His main interests include Early
Modern epistolography, Neo-Latin poetry (16th century to present), and the
Classical Tradition.
He is general editor of the international journal Humanistica Lovaniensia.
Journal of Neo-Latin Studies (Leuven); co-editor of the series Supplementa

Furthermore, he is vice-president of the Academia Latinitati Fovendae
(Rome), a member of the Conseil international pour l’édition des
oeuvres complètes d’Érasme (Rotterdam), a member of the Projectcommissie-Erasmus
(Huygens Instituut, The Hague), a member of the Consiglio direttivo
of the Centro Europeo di Studi Umanistici (Torino), a member of
the Scientific Advisory Board of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for
Neo-Latin Studies (Innsbruck - Vienna); and scriptor Latinus of
Leuven University.
Current
research
One of Sacré’s current research topics is Neo-Latin literature by and in
the times of Pope Alexander VII Chigi (1655-1667); furthermore he takes
a special interest in the history of Neo-Latin literature from 1700 on;
he prepares an annotated edition of Marcus Faustinus Gagliuffius’s Specimen
de fortuna Latinitatis; together with M. Verweij (Brussels) he is preparing
an inventory of the manuscript correspondence of Erycius Puteanus kept at
the Royal Library, Brussels.
